Do You Feel Fulfilled?

Do you feel fulfilled? Or does it feel as if something is missing in your life? If your answer is the latter, there is a reason why.

You’re not following your passions.

Your passions are the gateway to fulfillment. They are your soul whispering, “Follow me. I’ll take you to the life of your dreams.”

Most of us were taught to shut down our passions when we were young. There are many reasons why. See if you recognize yourself in any of these four rules that I’ve seen to be key reasons why you might be shut down to living a fulfilled life.

  1. You’re not listening to your feelings. From a very young age, we are programmed to believe that being strong is the key to happiness and success. The truth, however, is just the opposite. Getting vulnerable and allowing yourself to feel is a tremendous act of courage and the path to discover your passions.
  1. You have a subconscious belief that says you must behave. Were you ever told to “settle down” when you were a kid? Or maybe your family lived by the rule that children should be seen and not heard. If this is the case, your family’s actions sent a message that says your wants and desires don’t matter, and the path to happiness is by getting others’ approval. And because children don’t know any better, they take this as truth. So they grow up believing that the loving thing to do is to always behave.
  1. You live by the societal belief that says you must work yourself to death to have happiness and success. This belief takes you away from your passions and keeps you on a perpetual hamster wheel of trying to get ahead. True happiness and success are determined by your sense of fulfillment.
  1. You feel you must take care of everyone else first. Most of us have been told that this is love. However, if you’re unhappy and not loving yourself unconditionally and following your passions, you will eventually take out your resentment, sadness and blame on the ones you’re taking care of. Wouldn’t it be so much kinder to live a life you love so you spread that message to the people around you?

Do you see yourself in any of these rules? Are you living the life you’ve always dreamed of? If not, here’s a clue to how you can shift it:

Break the rules and follow your passions!

Each of the reasons I’ve pointed out above is based in a belief that says you must deny yourself to have the life you’ve always wanted. Is that working for you?

How would your life be different if you followed your passions? Can you imagine it? What would you be doing each day? How would you feel?

Your passions are God speaking to you.
They are the path to feeling fulfilled.

The beautiful thing about following your passions is that as you do, you maintain a high Worthiness Quotient. I’ve written about this in many blogs, but it’s really important to understand this.

Your Worthiness Quotient is how open you are to receiving love, nurturing and support simply for being who you were created to be. The more you love yourself, the higher your Worthiness Quotient will go, and the more you’ll be open to receive God’s unlimited abundance. Following your passions is key to raising and maintaining your Worthiness Quotient.

If you’re following your passions, congratulations! If you’re not, what is it going to take to make a shift?

Don’t wait for others to tell you it’s okay. If you do, you’re following Rule #2.

I often hear people say, “I have no idea what my passions are!” Do you feel this way? If so, there’s a good chance you’re living by Rule #1. It’s time to listen to your feelings and ask yourself what gets you on fire. Think of discovering your passions as an adventure to fulfillment!

If you’re working yourself to death, you’re following Rule #3. It’s time to take a break. I’m guessing your first thought is, “I’m too tired!” Well, following your passions actually gives you life-force energy. You’ll feel alive and energized so you can get through the mundane with grace and ease.

And finally, do you hear yourself saying things like, “Well, when I get this done for so-and-so, I’ll take that art class”? And what about this one? “When my kids are grown I’ll have more time for myself.” I’ve heard these excuses from clients and friends over and over for years. They are strong indicators that you’re following Rule #4. But here’s a clue: There will always be something you feel you must do for others. As long as there are people in your life, and as long as you live by Rule #4 that you must take care of everyone else at the expense of yourself, you will deny your passions and never truly know what it means to be fulfilled.

Following your passions is a grand adventure to inner and outer abundance. As you give yourself permission to live full out, you’ll add tremendous color to your life. You’ll feel so alive and finally discover what’s been missing all along! Your youth will be renewed. And you’ll feel more fulfilled than you’ve ever imagined.

And it all begins when you make a choice to follow your passions.

  1. I recently walked out on a 32 year marriage in which I worked myself to death at work and at home. Everything you have been writing about in Women Leaders of Love is so true. I have been a physician for 33 years and I can tell you that if more people learned to love themselves first there would be a lot less emotional and physical illness. Thank you for being a leader in this movement.
